Read This Book: Sam Walker's "Fantasyland"

"Fantasyland" by Sam Walker: I said this when the book came out last spring. I said this for my 2006 year-end Sports Book of the Year awards. I'll say it again: This was the best sports book of the last year -- and among my Top 3 favorite sports books of all time. And, as of yesterday, it's finally out in paperback, which means it's now cheap for you -- and the end of any excuse you may have had for not reading it. Here's the Amazon link. And here's the link to Sam's site for the book and also to an old interview he did with Deadspin about it. (Plus: In addition to being a great writer, he's an even better guy. Bastard.) -- D.S.

UPDATE: Mark Cuban is about to buy the Chicago Cubs? I've been on record for a long time that he's the best owner in sports. This would be incredible, both for the Cubs and for baseball. This might even get me to re-assess my long-dormant Cubs fandom. Wow.

No offense, but I get sick of people I actually know or that I am in the SAME league with obsessively talking about their team. There's no way I'm reading 364 pages about some other guy's team. That's crazy.

"And then I traded him for closer and a back up third baseman, but they both went on IR the next week and they guy I traded ended up being rookie of the year!"

Yeah, I don't care. Your fantasy team is YOUR fantasy. Everybody else in reality doesn't care.

It was getting tough navigating through past posts...

You know what is really funny is that Dan's favorite book is about Fantasy but yet he wimped out of playing in the fantasy baseball league!!!

Yeah, I loved Fantasyland as well. And I would be absolutely ecstatic for MLB if Cuban bought the Cubs.

Dan,

First, Florida because your own school (NW) isn't good and now back on the Cubs wagon because Cuban may be the new owner. That's a new low for fairweather-ness.

Come on Dan, join our league.
If you win you can rub it in
for the whole winter.

I want to read that book, guess I will have to order it.

I agree Dan. You should join our league. We're doing roto so I'll probably be worse than you.

Anyway, as a lifelong Cubs fan who bleeds Cubbie blue, I would love it if Cuban bought the Cubs. The Tribune Company only bought it to make money. They really don't care how the team plays on the field no matter what they say. Having Cuban own the team would mean the owner would actually care about the team and would invest accordingly, be it with money or interest. It can only be a good thing.

Dan if the Arizona Cardinals get new ownership are you going to jump on their bandwagon? Are you telling me that you do not have one team in any sport at any level that you are a die hard fan of?

Thanks for the book recommendation/review. I love reading, so I like this.

Is he, is he really going to buy my beloved Cubbies!!!???

Hell yes, I think he's a great owner. I don't care much for the NBA but I love what he has done in Dallas and I want him to win a Championship in Dallas and Chicago.

Where is the fantasy league? Can someone post it on here so I can join in the fun?

Aren't like 90% of Cubs fans fair weather? They are the "pink hats" of baseball teams.

I watch every Cubs game I can. I cheer for them thru thick and thin. I cheered for them all last season. I even supported Sammy Sosa during his corked bat thing even (and still do). Steriods are completely different and I don't support him much anymore. But there are the faithful among us.

I was going to say, if Cubs fans only supported them when they're winning....well, there might be a couple of 105 year olds still cheerin' 'em on, but that would be about it.

dammit, nooooo...Mark Cuban...hold on until those bastards who own the Pirates finally sell the team, you're a Pittsburgh boy!!! WE NEED CUBAN!!!

Please God, Please God, Please God, Please God....

Cuban owning the Cubs? YES! PLEASE!

If anything is going to shake up this 100 year malaise, it's an owner who's bottom line is winning....

Cuban already sent an email to the Tribune stating that he is not interested in buying the Cubs...sorry guys it would be great though!

I meant that most Cubs fans only "support" the team because it is "cool" to do so. They go to games for the Atmosphere, not the team.

I dont get why Dan has no qualms about being a fairweather fan. For someone whose whole life revolves around sports, you would think he'd show some dedication to at least ONE team in ONE sport.

how can you be a "long-dormant fan"? isnt that some sort of paradox?
