If there was a marketing/business bent to the Daily Quickie, it was only because I sold the column to ESPN.com only after investing two years (and decades of future debt) to get my MBA from Harvard Business School. This might have made me the only sports columnist out there with an MBA, and it certainly made me the only HBS grad with a daily sports column. I don't say that to drop the name as much as to explain (to those who might not have known) why I maintain a fascination for occassionally viewing sports news through the lens of business.
That's all a lead-up to today's news that the NHL has struck a distribution deal on YouTube. We can perhaps disagree about the future prospects of YouTube, but this marks the smartest, most forward-thinking thing the NHL has done, marketing-wise, in years. I'm not sure it's going to increase the fan base -- though if they put together more funny/interesting video, it might -- but they are reaching the fans where they're currently hanging out. More "niche" leagues could learn from the NHL about bringing the game to the fans, not expecting the flow to go the other way.

Wait ... what do you mean "sold" the column. You mean - sold the idea of the column?

What a tease!
It may be smart and forward-thinking, but unless it increases the fan base, and in turn raises revenue, it's nothing more then a cute idea. But, assuming that it will take a minimal investment from the NHL, it's definately worth a shot. It's gotta be better then OLN or Lifetime, or whatever network they're on now.
The last time you had "interesting news" for your readers, you cancelled the Quickie. Has another opportunity led you away from a daily sports blog?
I guess a niche sport pairing with a niche website makes more sense than going to OLN for the TV audience.
By the way, does anyone know what channel OLN is on DirecTV?
It's not even called OLN anymore. They changed their name to Versus.
Probably so they could show more indoor things.
The NHL page on Yahoo has links to live streaming games. So what's the real story on the YouTube thing?
I am a sports fan and have my MBA as well, so I particularly appreciate posts that bring the two together. I hope big things are in store for you. I've enjoyed reading thus far and plan to for a long time to come.

Larry Johnson has agreed to post daily cartoons?

You're officially renaming the blog "UF Gators Sports Central?"
I'm reminded of a recent line on Heroes:
"I'll put the video on YouTube and make millions!"
"YouTube is free, you idiot!"

if we dissect the term "somewhat interesting," one can gather that the news Dan has is "less than interesting;" which could imply that the news coming tomorrow is not at all interesting. Thanks Dan! j/k
I'm going to guess that Dan's blog is going to start selling ad space, and he'll be having podcasts and youtube clips.
The LA Times on the NHL-YouTube deal:
"The NHL will upload game highlights directly onto YouTube's website as part of a broader agreement that is designed to help the league police — and profit from — hockey-related video that appears online.
The agreement that will be announced today also promises the NHL a share of revenue generated by online advertising that appears on web pages with hockey-related video."
Seems like a small start that doesn't really hurt anyone. Could pay benefits down the road. Biggest plus is that if you want to find something from last night's game, it's a safe bet it'll be on YouTube.
It's good to be able to rely on that.
Also - the NHL has been posting full games on Google Video for a while. (Link) After Google-YouTube merger, I wonder if this is related.

I don't like the sound of this. Last time, it was the Biggest. Announcement. Ever.--which sounded great--and it turned out to be, "ESPN canned me so no more Quickie." Still feeling a little burned on that one, so cryptic announcements by Dan make me a little nervous...
Put up a tipjar and sell Google adspace.
By not doing so, you're literally throwing money out the window with your readership.
You're even getting spammed, that's quite a compliment
wow Shanoff is getting fired from Blogger too?
scar tissue, I have you figured out. You're really Brett Favre in disguise aren't you?
bingo. I only post after I pop a few percoset. *pop*
I'm guessing he got a gig at some big sports website, but not a daily column, meaning the blog continues but in a limited capacity.
As for the LeBron comparison, he could have flopped as well. Wouldn't be the first guy to be over-hyped too early.
My Guess is Shanoff is finally going to tell us why he left ESPN and the daily quickie?
Barring that the person who said he probably has a new deal with a major sports website is probably correct.
what is this "hockey" you speak of
is that the thing where you go to the mall instead of going to school?
or did are you referring to that dance that the kindergarten children do with all that "shaking all about" and the "putting your right foot in" and simply leaving out the "pokey"?
Well, you got my attention.
I'm sure he'll just be joining a 'community of bloggers' or something similar.
