NFL Live-Comment Tailgate

In my Florida-Michigan hysteria, I almost forgot that there was an NFL slate of games today, whose top storylines have a BCS title-game feel, circa 2006: Vince Young leads the Titans to a shocking upset of the Colts, and Reggie Bush scores 4 TDs in a Saints win over the 49ers. Deliver your own quick-hit NFL analysis in the Comments section. (Or continue the raging Michigan-Florida debate below...)

Dan-

Have you heard of this guy? I think they call him Reggie Bush. Apparently he was some sort of great player in college. I didn't know about his past accomplishments so I did not see this coming. However I assume that people who were aware of these things would have foreseen such things. Did you?

4 TD's. Eat it Shanny.

Reggie Bush? You mean he's good? wth? pshh... he's not good at all.

He's GREAT

OH MY GOD.

Guys, seriously. Bush has a few red-zone TDs against SF, and that somehow makes up for an underachieving year?

Get real.

Brian - Beacon, NY said...

You obviously didn't watch the game and watch HOW he got his points and yards. I watched most of the game and he looked really comfortable in making the Niners miss. I know the Niners D isn't good, but still, the moves were sick.

Ma4tt (the 4 is silent) said...

To take that a little further - he's not even the best rookie on his own team.

Other notes:

New England looked like shit.

Favre should retire at the end of the year, but let's not bash him. He's a first-ballot HOF'er and top 5 all-time at his position.

LDT is a god.

Rex Grossman is god - god-awful, that is. Kyle Orton! Kyle Orton!

Fantasy players who own Edgerrin James must REALLY be hating Marcel Shipp right about now.

And in the biggest upset of the day - really, not an upset. If Tennessee hung in there AT Indy, is a home win that surprising?

My Steelers are leading Tampa, but Big Ben (aka the Big Interception) threw another pick in the 1st quarter.

Two turnovers on the same play in the Dallas-Giants game.

What a day in the NFL. Still, I'm eyeing the 8pm BCS show.

Ok, so I didn't see the game. I have seen him in 4-5 other games this year, though. Bush is talented, just like Mike Vick is talented. How's that working out in Atlanta?

Fact of the matter is, Bush has not performed like you'd expect a #2 pick to perform.

Every time I start to get down about the Packers' season, I remember that I'm not a Lions fan, and somehow, that makes everything seem brighter.

Brian - Beacon, NY said...

Well he's not the #1 guy in New Orleans either. He's splitting time w/McCallister. Nevertheless, the Saints are 8-4 and I don't think any Saints fan are complaining about the future of their team right now.

How many top 5 picks have had Hall-of-Fame or MVP rookie seasons? He's doing just fine (sharing time with Deuce McCallister BTW).

Lets revise your statement for its true meaning:

Fact of the matter is, Bush has not performed like you'd expect Reggie Bush to perform.

chrth - I tell my mom, who's a Packer Backer, the same thing.

brian - I just don't think Bush is ever going to be a guy who's like LDT. Back when the Quickie was still going, DS listed a bunch of players whose careers Bush might approach. I noted that on that list, Brian Westbrook was missing... and that seems about right to me. He's a Westbrook type. Good runner, good receiver. In the NFL, you have D-Linemen running 4.45 40s.

Bush isn't playing against Stanford anymore. He's playing against men - very, very fast men. He'll have good days like this, but he'll also have more days like he's had this season: Days where he has a lot of touches, but gets 2.5 yards a carry and 5 yards a catch. He's not going to revolutionize the sport or anything.

(In my humble opinion.)

Ma4tt (the 4 is silent) said...

marcomarco -

No. Bush is performing EXACTLY how I thought he'd perform. That's the problem. He's not a #2 guy. He's a top-10 guy who'll have a good career, but he isn't HOF-caliber material. He's playing as well as he can play right now. Wait until he starts taking hits, taking the punishment that a running back (average shelf life: 4 years) takes, and he'll be out of the league with a good, but not great, NFL career.

I'm new to reading Dan's blog but I loved the Daily Quickie so I'll be reading DS's blog from now on and am glad to have the New Quickie in my life.

But I just wanted to thank all the Cleveland Browns fans for giving the Chiefs a loss. My Bengals needed that because now KC has the same record at 7-5 and we beat them head to head.

Tonight's game should be fun. Gotta have the AFC teams keep losing in case Cincy doesn't catch up to Baltimore.

Browns played really well today, especially after that terrible 30-0 loss last week.

You guys don't know shit about Reggie Bush. Fact of the matter is, no one knows what is career is going to be like.

People said Warrick Dunn was too small too. That he would never be more than a 3rd down back.

Know one has any idea. Everyone touting his 4 TD's today as any more than he got 4 TD's today are just stupid as Dan for panning him 8 games into his rookies season.

The guy is a major contributor on a team that is 8-4 that was 3-13 last year.

These are the facts.

Oh, and the Packers are garbage, Brett Favre is washed up and both have been that way for years.

Ma4tt (the 4 is silent) said...

dave -

Favre isn't garbage. Think the Bears don't wish he were their QB right about now?

He's still in the top half of QBs in the NFL, and a first ballot HOF'er.

As for Bush - you compare him to Warrick Dunn. I can dig that. But is Warrick Dunn a star? No. He's a competent, good running back, but he's not a gamebreaker. Never has been, never will be. You're just making my case for me.

Ma4tt (the 4 is silent) said...

What a retarded penalty by Flozell. Then again, what do you expect from a guy named FLOZELL!?

Ma4tt (the 4 is silent) said...

Look at Parcells' face as Grammatica goes out to try this 47 yarder!

Ma4tt (the 4 is silent) said...

Ah, as the G'ints call timeout, they say it's only 46. ("only" haha.. I couldn't make a 30 yarder.)

Parcells is flipping the fuck out right now.

Ma4tt (the 4 is silent) said...

And he drilled it. It would have been good from 60.

That's fucking awesome. Bill Parcells will be lauded as a GOD for the next week.

Ma4tt (the 4 is silent) said...

Did anyone see Witten grab Grammatica after the kick? He's like, DON'T JUMP! DON'T JUMP! YOU'LL HURT YOURSELF AGAIN!

Oh man. I hate the Cowboys, but damn, I'm happy for them. Great game.

Dave said...

@ma4tt (the four is silent for garbage)

The best thing you can compare Favre to is grossman?...

The Pack is garbage, they have been for years. Brett Favre is over the hill and is generally overrated by the adoring media. He has been for almost a decade now.

Steve said...

Wrong Gramatica Ma4tt

Ma4tt (the 4 is silent) said...

Ah yeah. Bill was forgettable, my bad.

dave, you moron: I'm obviously saying that Favre is a shit-ton better than Grossman. Otherwise, if they were comparable, why would the Bears want Favre?

See? Get it?

Ma4tt (the 4 is silent) said...

And lastly:

Favre has been overrated for almost a decade? What are you smoking? Did you forget the three straight MVPs? At the end of Dan Marino's career, you must have been one of the pussies saying that he was a terrible QB, too.

Benvious said...

Well, Florida it is...what a shame...punish a team for losing one game on the road against the unquestioned #1...

Kurt said...

Florida sucks, I hope they get shit on.

OchoCinco said...

I'm glad Florida got it. How do you say the SEC champion doesn't get to play for the National Championship? I'm sorry but if you think Michigan would go through Florida's schedule without a loss you are nuts.

Benvious said...

@ochocinco

I think this will easily be resolved after the game.

Quite simply, if OSU blows Florida out of the water, then I guess everyone will see it the way I do. If they don't, then I'll admit being wrong...

As for the SEC, I still don't understand how everyone puts them above the Big Ten this year...the Big Ten has 3 of the top 5 teams in the country!

Who replaced Holmgren with Marty?

FutureLegendVinceYoung said...

I was at the Colts/Titans game yesterday. Vince Young is just so fun to watch. There were about 4 or 5 3rd downs he converted by running the ball once the pocket collapsed. But the greatest thing was seeing a guy boot a 60 yard field goal that is something you just cannot describe.

If Favre played behind the Bears' O-line, he'd be even worse.

The same was said about Barry Sanders.
