Your Guest-Poster on Tuesday Morning...

is Bethlehem Shoals (with a little help from Dr. Lawyer Indian Chief) from Free Darko. It IS their time of year, after all... Enjoy.

PS: RIP, David Halberstam. In addition to his legendary war reporting and career as one of the finest authors of sports books of all time, he was an original contributor to ESPN.com's Page 2.

So less hockey than usual?

Probably and do not forget the prerequisite A-Rod slurping.

Hmm - 2 more meaningless Home Runs in a Yankees loss.

C'mon now guys... it's NBA playoff time! Wooooooo!!!

Wait... what do you mean "NBA playoff time" is an accurate statement for 1/4 of the calendar year?

CMFost said...

Round 2 of the NHL playoffs starts I think today and they will be done before Round 1 of the NBA which started Saturday

Actually, re-reading yesterday's comments, I have to make an addendum to guyinthecorner's "First round storylines" late comment yesterday:

"Cavs/Wiz not much but LeBron is always fun to watch"

Seriously - is it too late for the Wizards to start tanking for a lottery pick? Because with Butler & Arenas sitting in their nice pressed suits, they stand about as much chance as I would have going 1-on-1 against LeBron.

Keep in mind - I'm a 6'0", 280lb white guy with non-functional knees...

There, that's my First Round storyline. Commence talking about things I've missed.

Hey, if you're Greg Oden, close to Cleveland....Can you be hired in a non-basketball role, like in the marketing department? Sign a contract to work for them that way? And THEN, claim that the contract there supersedes any drafting results? Like, I can't play for Memphis, I'm legally bound to work for Cleveland? How is that situation avoided?

If the Yanks are 10 games out in June, and Houston's only a game out, doesn't it make it more compelling for Roger to stay with the Astros? If he's NOT going to be the one to put NY over the top in the East, why bother?

Just a what if....NY may turn it on soon enough to make it moot.

Big D said...

Good question on the "signing a contract" thing... dunno about that. I'm sure there are people far more versed in NBA rules and regs than I who post on here.

Though it would be interesting to watch Stephen A's head explode while he railed on about the travishamockery...

By the way - are we the only three schlubs in to work early this morning or what?

It should be interesting to see the "next phenom" Phil Hughes against the Jays on Thursday Night.

NHL playoffs start Wed. so tonite looks like Raptors/Nets and Jays/Sawx on the tube.

cmfost - so yesterday you bitched about not hearing about back-back-back-back homers because of the instant history but now complain because a-rod is having the best start of any player in history. you'd be begging for people to be talking if he was slumping right now. He has hit three 9th inning HR's this year (none of which while his team was ahead). You give the guy no credit and it shows ignorance - he is carrying a team that is struggling right now. Without him theyd probably be six or seven back instead of only four.

Meaningless homeruns? Surely you jest, CMfost. those are valuable fantasy commodities.

well a team can not pay anyone to do anyhting besides play, but so long as oden did not play then that would be ok he could wait a year and then play on the cavs.

Bobby Orr was signed at 12, oh the good ole days of the NHL.

Born in Parry Sound, Ontario, Canada, Orr displayed his ice hockey talents at a very early age. He started skating and playing Shinny at age four, and was signed by Boston Bruins' scout Wren Blair at the age of twelve. As a 14-year-old he played for the Oshawa Generals in the junior league Ontario Hockey Association, competing against eighteen-, nineteen- and twenty-year-olds.

ndyanks has it right (and I'm a Sox fan). Without ARod the Yankees would be in a deeper hole than they are. He's got 3 ninth inning HRs (though last night was "typical" ARod hitting a meaningless HR), 2 of which were game winners.

But it is only April. That means let's see if ARod can keep it up. And the Yankees will get better.

Brian in Oxford said...

what do you mean that they can't pay them to do anything but play? i mean, it's a stretch, but what if they named Oden GM? (I'm sure Cavs fans might actually welcome this, too.)

Brian in Oxford said...

If Oden were the Cavs' GM, could he legally be banned from playing for them, because his draft rights were held by another team? And what if his GM deal paid him $5 mil a year to start, and he plays for free? (ha ha ha, wink wink)

Anonymous said...

if they are playing than tehy can not get paid for anything else by a team, but what if an owner owns a property. Like could the maloof brothers pay oden 20 mill to perform at a casino and then like 1 mil to play. I think they could

I think it is pretty fitting that ARod is going to go down as the greatest April player ever.

A-pril Rod - had to make the joke

Brian in Oxford said...

say....the new Quickie is up, and it's pretty good, and laid out very well. (better paragraphs?) Comments aren't working on that post, though.

I find it funny that Free Darko gives us more hockey news than Shanoff ever has.

i wouldn't call trying to come back from four runs in the ninth a nothing HR - just because they didn't win, helping your team pull within striking distance with only 1 out in the ninth isn't nothing. Give me a break - every HR can't be a game winning grand slam...the expectations are getting extremely ridiculous.

CMFost said...

raf your right that is about the only thing A-rod's home runs mean at the moment. The fill in guys said it perfectly about a-rod and the yankees.

CMFost said...

NDYANK - if A-Rod hits 80 HR's this year but the yankees lose 90 games will you really care that he hit 80 hr's

ndyanksfan05 said...

i wouldn't be happy, obviously...its not really the point - the point is that you people are not willing to give the guy any credit about anything...no matter what. If he hits 80 HRs and drives in 130-150 runs and they do lose, its not going to be his fault...he is doing everything in his power to win games (including playing defense) and you guys sound like idiots talking about his HR are meaningless (which almost none of them are).

(we should all move over to the actual quickie comments now, it's up)
