Saturday 01/27 A.M. Quickie:
Serena Crushes In Battle With Maria

Serena crushes Maria: Is that supposed to be a proxy for our discussion yesterday of whether you're a "Serena man/woman" or a "Maria man/woman?"

Crawford explodes: Who correctly predicted that Jamal Crawford would score 52 points... ever in his career – let alone last night in a Knicks win over the Heat? (5th-best scoring binge in Knicks history).

Wiz(?) rule(?) East(?): Don't look now, but the team with the best record in the East is... the Wizards, after they beat the Pistons last night.

I had the Wiz picked for 3rd in the East this season, but FIRST? For a Wizards fan, the thought is simply impossible, but we'll take it.

(And it's why Gilbert Arenas is the first-half NBA MVP and Caron Butler absolutely deserves to be an All-Star this season.)

Speaking of unlikely: Who the hell is Brandt Snedeker, and how is he leading at the PGA's Buick Invitational?

NFL: Which coach might make a good caretaker for the Cowboys job for a season or two before they want to promote Jason Garrett? Chargers D.C. Wade Phillips seems to fit the bill.

College Hoops: Officials admit that Duke got extra time in its buzzer-beating win over Clemson. (No! Duke getting a favorable call... at home? Say it ain't so!)

Senior Bowl Mania: Isn't this whole exercise a bit archaic, given that it's a draft showcase and given the number of juniors who enter the draft but aren't scouted this week? Top players to watch in today's showcase of senior talent:

Ohio St QB Troy Smith.
Florida QB Chris Leak.
Texas DB Aaron Ross.
Michigan DB Leon Hall
LSU WR Dwayne Bowe.
Cal WR Daymeion Hughes
Nebraska DE Adam Karriker
Penn State OL Levi Brown

I think the real discussion isn't whether you're a Serena man/woman. It's whether Serena is a man or a woman. She totally has Finkle/Einhorn potential. It's amazing how well she can play tennis with her sausage tucked away.

Rumor is that BC is petitioning the ACC for tomorrow's game at Duke.

We're trying to get Gilbert Arenas to play, since he promised 85 against the Dookies.

Hey, if Duke can cheat, why not us?

So Serena wiped the floor with Sharapova. So f-----g what?!?!?!

I think it says more about the state of women's tennis than Serena (and Maria).

Did anyone else hear the announcer say at the end of the match, "I don't think Maria has ever been spanked like that before."

How many guys do you think would be lined up to help her out?

Hw much was awesome Serena and how much was awful Maria? She looked scared of serving. How many of Serena's points were off double-faults?

Dan are the Heat in danger of missing the playoffs yet?

Seriously, how is Gil a more worthy MVP candidate than Mamba? Washington is 25-17 in the craptastic East, and the Lakers are 27-16 in the insane West. I love Agent Zero, but what Kobe is doing against real competition is far more impressive...

Oh and Manninghamwhof'ncares, I think pros scouts saw all they needed to against USC....

@ tyler:

There no way any team would willingly deal for Matt Clement - there's about a 60/40 chance that he never throws another pitch. his shoulder got absolutely destroyed last year.

Besides - the Sox had the chance to deal for Helton a couple years ago and passed - his numbers are mostly a product of Coors Field. Put him in Fenway, and although he'd probably start off with a .290/30/110 season, the money he's being paid wouldn't justify it.

the deal framework is Mike Lowell and Matt Clement (Both contracts come off the book after 2007 so even if Clement dont play its attractive when dealing a 100 million contract)

The Rockies then want another player who they can look towards as part of the team for a good chunk of the future, they are looking at either Craig Hansen or Manny Delcarmen both of whom Boston has no interest in trading right now.

Now A deal could probably be worked out if Colorado has interest in either Coco Crisp or David Murphy 2 outfieldsers who would be under Colorado's control for numerous years and both of whom could be available for different reasons.

Crisp disapointed last year and Theo Epstein has proven before he will unload new players qyuiuckly such as Edgar Renteria and Murphy is stuck ina crowded outfield picture with Drew and Pena and top prospect Jacoby Elsbury.

I think this deal will get done and Lowell, Tavarez, Crisp and/or Murphy all going with Colorado eating a little under half Helotns contrct, mainly because this lineup would be hard to pass up...

SS Julio Lugo
RF JD Drew
DH David Ortiz
LF Manny Ramirez
1B Todd Helton
CF Wily Mo Pena
C Jason Varitek
3B Kevin Youkilis
2B Dustin Pedroia
