NBA Draft 1998: 10 Years Later?

About 8 job lives ago, I was a columnist and editor for SI.com. I was looking up something else via Google and ran across something: Look at this NBA draft superlatives list I did in 1998. Check out the insanely dated references! The wince-inducing wordplay! (I can't believe I actually correctly predicted that Paul Pierce would be the king of the draft class.) Cripes, has it really been 10 years? I'm so freaking old. -- D.S.

This may sound crazy, especially since as I write the Celtics are whooping the Lakers, but Pierce is totally overrated. The guy never met a shot he didn't like, and he's still just as capable of scoring 4 as he is 24, same as ever. Funny how quick people are to overlook things like that when you're winning, isn't it? The championship will be a crowning achievement of a career nobody really cared about until Garnett and Allen showed up.

Pretty good on the analysis back then. I can't remember half those guys right now.

Please, Dirk Nowitzki is the king of the '98 class. If Dirk had KG and Ray on his team, he would have a championship too. Should have gone: 1. Nowitzki 2. Pierce 3. Antawn Jamison 4. Vince Carter 5. Rashard Lewis
