Full coverage tomorrow (in a new post), but if you feel like discussing tonight with the 10 people who are poking around the sports-blog world, have at it. Oh, and this: Gators. -- D.S.

Quick one before tomorrow. I am convinced, CONVINCED, that a mentally handicapped person was in charge of seeding this year.

Hey Dan, at least your Gators will get to the Sweet 16. But then they will see what turtle power is. FEAR THE TURTLE!!

I agree with Jason. The seeding in a lot of cases makes no sense. Looks like Drexel getting swept by ODU seemed to cost them. I like Pitt to go down in round 1. They're potentially the most overrated team in the country.

How is Florida the #1 overall seed?

Texas to win it all

Mikepcfl said...

I still think Drexel got screwed. They should have gotten in over Arkansas and Stanford in my opinion.

Jason & bd got it right. How does Texas Tech get in over Kansas State? KSU finished 4th & TTU 5th in conference. KSU also beat TTU in the Big 12 Tourney, and we've even got a "name" coach! The NCAA must not remember their time in Kansas very fondly, because they shafted KU as well, sending them West as a 1. UCLA has to be hitting their knees tonight and thanking God that the NCAA tournament comittee lost their f-ing mind.

Go Gators.
Go cure cancer.

1 seed or not, that commercial is ridiculous.

To the dude that tells UF to fear the turtle...my question is fear what? You guys lost to Miami and got a gift seeding. You should be playing UF this weekend.

This selection is the most F-upped that I can remember. How is FL the number 1 seed overall? That is a joke. How does KSU not get in with the number of wins they have? It would be nice to see the tourney selection committee travel west of the Mississippi and see that the Big East is a joke, the ACC is overrate except at the top and the SEC is terrible.

OH MY GOD!!!! UNLV getting NOOOOOOO respect? The world wide leader is pissing me off. You'd think UNLV has no chance to beat Georgia Tech. Tech could certainly win it, but UNLV is no patsy. Yes, Tech can play physical, but Joel Anthony and Wendell White can bring some serious physicality.

I'm drooling waiting for that Texas-UNC matchup. Most athletes in a sweet sixteen game ever? Would either survive Georgetown in the Elite 8?

Jayhawk 4 Life said...

I can say that Florida being the overall #1 is because they are the team that NO ONE wants to play, and I am a KU fan...

I think that KU being a #1 and having to play either Kentucky or 'Nova is pretty rough. I think the West is pretty darn stacked. That being said, I am just glad that we have no chance of playing a #16 that starts with a B...

Smell the March Madness, y'all, and Rock Chalk!!!

I'm not sure Wright State'll beat Pitt.

And also, Shanoff, I can't help but notice that your two locks of Michigan and Mississippi State not only didn't make the tournament, but weren't even among the last teams out (Air Force, Drexel, 'Cuse, FSU, West Va.)

Wow not only did mid-majors get royally screwed in the selection, the ones that did make it are freaking playing EACH OTHER!

Worst. Bracket. Ever.

Steve said...

Seth Davis is a total moron. He had Purdue out of the tournament and they ended up being a 9 seed, not even close to being out. How does that idiot have a freaking job?

Mega said...

Oh, and does anyone still think Wisconsin is better than OSU?

The heroin sheik said...

As a gator fan i think we deserved a 1 seed but how are we 1 overall. That makes no sense at all. At first glance at the brackets I could see UF , So Ill, Georgetown, and Texas AM making the final four. The gators really do have a pretty easy path to the final four. I am hoping for a Ill So ILL game in the second round. I don't know why but I want to see this. You gotta love march madness.

New Mexico State got jobbed a 13 seed and we have to play Texas. Here's hoping Reggie has a little more magic and we can pull off the upset.

John said...

How did Stanford get in? I didn't think Texas Tech should get in either until I looked at their quality wins. Fear VCU, Pitt. might win that first round game, but VCU could make a run to the Sweet 16. At first glance I think the West is the hardest region at the top with four potential tournament winners, although there does not seem to be too much upset potential in that region.

Kevin said...

How did the mid-majors get screwed? Drexel is the only mid-major that had any arguement whatsoever that they should have been in, and K-State probably had a better arguement than Drexel.

Why did OSU end up in the South region and Florida in the Midwest? Can somebody please explain that to me?

Unknown said...

K-State shouldn't have made it. Their unbalanced sched was off the charts. Not to mention that their best was with Bill Walker and he's not there. Texas A&M had great wins and deserved it.

Drexel got jobbed and there's no 2 ways about it. They didn't get it as bad as they could've. If 'cuse made it that would've been crazy. Drexel won at 'cuse.

Not that I'm sold on the Terps beating the Gators or anything (in fact I'm still really pissed about playing Davidson in the 1st round, seriously look at the other 13s, I'd rather play any other 13) but Maryland is the team that Florida doesn't want to see.

Florida bullys people down low. Which is great except that Maryland's big guys are great at drawing fouls and the two guys off the bench are huge. Florida can also get by with experience as a large factor. Although Maryland doesn't have a whole lot of NCAA time, they are very senior heavy and very smart.

That will be a great game along with Texas / UNC.

Let's play "Is the committee smarter than a 5th grader"

UNC is in the East. True
Ohio State is in the South. huh?
Florida is in the midwest. wha?
Kansas is in the west. Well compared to everyone else...yes.

You would think with the head of the selection committee being from Princton they would be able know their geography.

Questions I have:

1. How does Ohio State (1) feel about possibly playing Texas A&M (3) in the elite eight in the state of Texas?

2. If Florida is the #1 overall seed (don't ask me how) why aren't they playing the winner of the play-in game and in the South region?

3. If KU is playing the winner of the play-in game, wouldn't they be the #1 overall seed? And if so, why are they playing in the West were the #2 seed UCLA gets to stay in California.

4. Why is UNC, the lowest ranked of the #1's, the only 1 seed to stay within their own territorial region?

5. How does Ohio State feel being the near unaminous #1 ranked team and the team with the fewest loses of the #1s feel about being put in the South rather than the Midwest?

6. Why would you put the two teams most everyone picked to win the national title (KU and Florida) on the same side of the bracket so they meet in the national semis?

And I'm not ready to coherently write about the bubble teams because I don't believe the committee was coherent when making some of their picks and seedings.

Answers to jhawkjjm:

1. Pretty bad, I'd assume.

2. I've always wondered that...the top #1-seed never plays the play-in game winner. Don't know why this is.

3. See #2. And I think one of the committee members forgot to bring their compass...

4. Well, there aren't really and Florida or Kansas-area sites, so you can't really get either of them close to home.

5. My theory is that there was some very strong crack cocaine in the room where the committee was meeting. Nothing else makes much sense, really.

6. See #5. Actually, I think that pretty much explains everything they did today.

In the committee's defense, though, I did like what they did with the bubble teams, as far as putting teams in and out goes.

They did say on the CBS broadcast that the 1 seeds were seeded so 1 and 4 were on one side and 2 and 3 on the other. Therefore, since Florida is #1 overall (which I don't agree with, but that's another argument), Kansas had to be the 4th #1 and UNC and OSU were 2 and 3, not sure on the order.

If you go by the title of the regions, it doesn't make much sense to have Florida in the Midwest and OSU in the South, but the regional thats closest to Florida actually is St. Louis (Midwest) and therefore OSU has to go to San Antonio.

JHawk, on the play in game, I believe the game is played in Ohio, so they usually have the winner of that game go against a 1 seed thats playing in that area and on a Friday/Sunday schedule, not necessarily the #1 overall.

How has no one here mentioned Syracuse getting dicked big time? People were saying they were a lock even if they lost to Uconn in the first round of the Big East tourney.

John have you actually watched VCU play lately or are you just regurgitating what some analyst on TV said? They looked like shit in their tourney final and I think Duke can beat them (I hope not though).

I think the most intriguing matchup of the first round is Notre Dame/Winthrop. I wish Duke had drawn Winthrop instead.

2. Florida and FAMU played in the regular season, the committee tries to prevent rematches for a 1st round game. If FAMU wins the playin game then they'd play Florida.

What's that sound? I feel like it's getting closer and closer...

every year it seems that there are teams left out (or somehow put in) that seem wrong.

my biggest gripe is that time handicaps the comittee. with conference tourneys ending just minutes before the brackets are released, of course the selection committee's gonna mess some picks up.

why not try to start the conference tourney games a day earlier so the comittee has an entire day to figure things out. not being rushed, i bet we'd all be a bit happier.

with that, dan, looks like the gators got a nice draw!

Unknown said...

The play-in game is in Dayton and the winner of that game plays Friday. For travel purposes, the play-in game winner plays the #1 seed playing in the location closest to Dayton, which is Chicago. Has nothing to do with playing against the #1 overall team.

I hate to say this, I really do, but Duke and their run of Sweet 16 appearances is going to remain intact. They will handle VCU (who as someone noted earlier was thouroughly unimpressive in their conference tournament final) and then they will get the only team that annually is more overrated and underachieves more than the Blue Devils. Ladies and Gentlemen, your Pittsburgh Panthers. Yeah, I can't wait to watch that match-up of 14 feet of the worst centers that America has to offer, Josh McRoberts and Aaron Gray. No way Duke is a #6 seed, no way. Yet here they are with arguably the best draw of any #6 seed in the tournament (How would you like to be Louisville, who finsihed 2nd in the Big East and gets two teams with huge talent and lots of impressive wins, Stanford and Texas A & M, for their trouble. Even though the games are in Lexington. Still compare those teams to VCU and Pitt). Thankfully, we will get the joy of watching Coach K sob at a press conference once he gets taken out by Ben Howland and the boys out in San Jose (Thank God the Bruins will be playing in California. I can't believe the committee didn't put Duke at the Meadowlands for the 19th year in a row).

I don't cry for teams that were left out. Teams begging for the double-digit seeds should win more next year.
Syracuse was not a snub.

Anyways, the only thing that matters is...GO MIAMI! WOOOO REDHAWKS!!!!!
