Yesterday, I echoed another guy who said if the Cards won they would be the "Most Improbable World Series Champs Ever."
You know I love a good superlative, so use the Comments section to suggest your own superlative to describe these 2006 World Champ St. Louis Cardinals.
Looking back a mere month ago -- when they were on the brink of the worst regular-season choke in baseball history -- it's absolutely incredible.
And, once again, it shows how much the "experts" know. Zilch.

Luckiest. Champs. Ever.
You cannot tell me Detroit didn't (quite literally) throw that game away, not to mention the fact that their hitters apparently forgot that you don't have to swing at every single pitch.
*throw that SERIES away.
OK, so I had my NBA Finals switched up. This wasn't the 2001 Finals everyone expected (Cards steal a game but get clobbered in the end). Instead, this was a carbon copy of the 2004 NBA Finals--underdog comes in and--against all expectation--destroys the favorite in a 5-game sweep.
Parity. Reigns. Supreme.
Not only do we have the most improbable winner from the eight teams that begain the playoffs less than a month ago, but we've also got the most improbable World Series MVP of "All-Time".
Or, in the fashion of the page to which I am posting:
Weirdest. MVP. Ever.
Seriously - is there one player in all of pro baseball that you could see winning a World Series MVP that would be more of an "out-of-the-blue" candidate than Eckstein?
Even for all the loathing about Barry Bonds, if the Giants ever won a ring (or whatever team he ends up on next year), he would probably be the odds on favorite on recognition alone.
I am just glad the Series is over so I do not have to listen to those two douche bags anymore. I will never forgive them for the shit they pulled during the 2004 playoffs. Hopefully McCarver decides to hangs it up and they pair Buck with Al Leiter.
I agree, big d; the most remarkable thing about that series to me, is that on a team with Pujols, Rolen, Edmonds, Carpenter, the little guy playing shortstop had the most big moments in the the series. Although that save by Pujols and toss to Weaver was the webgem of the series (and second only to Chavez's catch in the playoffs).
Anyway, in spite of what mike says, I think this series will be remembered more so than your average series, for the major upset; Even though it was two underdogs facing off, everyone kept thinking the AL was so vastly superior to the NL that the cards didn't have a chance.
Congrats to the Cards, who won the real world series against the Mets and quickly polished off the quintupleA winner Tigers, who had to resort to cheating just to avoid a sweep...
Did finishing of the A's so quickly make the Tigers rusty? It seemed they breezed through and then forgot how to play baseball. Or did they buy into what the "experts" said about them going to dominate and just go onto curise control?
Whoops.
Oh, and startvinceyoung, unfortunately they (Buck and McCarver) have the Worst. Contract. Ever. They're both sticking around for another 10 years or something. Gag me with pine tar.
Freaking. Jeff. Weaver.
I think the true story of this series was how Cards' pitchers played versus Detroit. Has there ever been a pitching staff that was talked down as much as the Cards have been (especially compared to Detroit) that delivered as many (1) quality starts and (2) scoreless relief?
And yes, Cards' fans are the only ones who believed the Cards would beat the Padres, much less the Mets and Tigers.
Eckstein had a great series, but he should let Granderson and Monroe drive his new yellow, Corvette sometime. If Granderson had not slipped and Monroe had not been inches too short, we would have a different MVP. I actually considered Weaver. Even though he lost Game 2 to Rogers, he kept the Cards in that game, and I think he made some money with last night's performance. I actually had the thought: "I hope the try to keep him on the staff next year!"
About Freaking. Jeff. Weaver.
This from a Cards fan who was completely dumbfounded when the Cards picked him up from the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim, Orange County, California, USA.
How about Freaking. Walt. Jockety. for MVP?
Most. Grateful. Champs. Ever.
It goes without saying that the Tiggers threw this series away. This was not the same Detroit team that took care of my A's (our collective assholes are still bleeding from that, thank you very much) and look at who the Cards relied on to win: David Eckstein, Catching Molina Brother #3, and Jeff Fucking Weaver. Yes, the same Jeff Fucking Weaver who was cut by the Angels mid-season. How does this happen? This might go down as the worst World Series ever.
Some of those eating sour grapes need to give credit where its due. I am eating crow since I thought it would be Detroit in 5.
Congrats to the Cards and their fans.
I agree with Mike: Luckiest. Champs. Ever.
As for the Tigers, a Gary Gaetti quote says it best:
"It's hard to hit when you have both hands around your neck."
It turns out that not only are the Cards the most improbable champs ever, they are also the most disrespected champs ever. Unless there was a collective retirement announcement I missed. I was just on the ESPN website, and saw that they were running a poll: Which of these 5 teams are most likely to win the series next year, and they proceed to list the Mets, Yankees, Twins, Tigers and, and, and, The Freaking White Sox; no mention of the cardinals. The day after they win the series. Impossible...
It was the Sloppiest. World Series. Ever.
No disrespect meant to the Cards, but--okay, I absolutely do mean disrespect to the Cards. They only won because they were marginally less sloppy. My thought, watching the three games that I saw all or part of, was "This is supposed to be championship-caliber baseball?"
The Cards played less sloppy?
I guess their pitching staff's contribution to the cause was overlooked (s pratt points it out too). Give credit where it's due - Dave Duncan had those guys prepared and ready to get the Tigers out. The only bad thing the pitching did was keep throwing Casey low & inside strikes so he could knock down the rightfield wall.
Did Detroit choke? Absolutely. But St. Louis put the Tigers' hands in position to squeeze.
Most boring series ever. Maybe it wasnot giving a shit about either team but to me it was one of the most boring WS ever. The cards pitching was more solid for the most part and I have no idea what the tigers were swinging at. I am just glad that the ECK contributed so much. He will always be my most favorite gator player in the bigs. He was scrappy in college and has been a consumate team player every where he has been. He might have only hit just under 300 in the 02 series but he had timely hits and was solid with the leather.
OK I will take my nose out of his ass. I did after all have a class with him at UF and he is also one of the nicest guys you could ever meet. Yeah Yeah Yeah my man crush is evident but I doubt there has ever been a better person to win the award in my recent memory.
