NFL Sunday Tailgate

Just got back from my trip to Miami -- been traveling all day, sorry for the delay. I did have one notable star sighting: A-Rod, of all people, on Friday night at a South Beach restaurant. More on that tomorrow.

For now, I wanted to put up a post so you could have your say about all things NFL happening today. Use the Comments area and post as developments occur. Back in full force tomorrow a.m.!

HOly fucking shit Who saw that fg as time ran out in the bucs game. The look on mcnabbs face of utter disbelief might be the best thing of this entire season because as bad as the bucs tackle we had no business winning that game. 62 yrds only guys with half a foot kick it that far.

I love the World Series. It takes Joe Buck out of the Fox Studio.

I think McNabb really cockgoblinned that game.

Whoops, I meant Batch with the 50-yard pass! And then the TD to Ward! We're all tied up at 38!

Actually I think the correct usage would be donovan mcnabb is a cockgoblin. I forgot how much the bucs defense messes with his head. I guess Ronde is trying to get a head start on picking up the slack now that riki tiki tavi is going to retire.

Oh yeah DAN way to go with the jags. You jump on their bandwagon and now they are getting punked by the TEXANS! All those jag fans in gville are gonna be mad at you next time you visit the inlaws.

While using 'cockgoblin' as a noun is traditional, I support the verbing of it.

Boommmmm...take that 5 yard false start penalty!

What a wacky sequence in Atlanta. Unbelievable.

It is a made up word so I guess you could use it in either way. Mcnabb cockgoblinned that game.(V)
That mark Brunell sure is a cockgoblin.(N)

My woman walked in and saw Mcnabb looking dumbstruck and she goes, "What happened he looks like someone ran over his dog." I told her how we won and she goes "What a pussy" Mcnabb getting called out by someone who has no clue about fotball now that is funny.

Joey Harrington had 62 pass attempts today.

... just think about that for a minute.

Steve said...

Well, when a woman calls you a pussy, that's groundbreaking.

Pretty good so far Dan, 1-7 this week, you should probably keep your day job...oh no wait...this is your day job. :-O

Well, to be fair to Dan, Peter King is only 2-6 so far. And Peter King follows the sport a heckuva lot more than Dan does.

i picked the Chiefs, Bucs, Falcons, Texans and Packers on the Yahoo pickem. Not bad. I also have Cleveland, Ariz and Washington in the late games 2 of those are looking decent still though Arizona needs to get going here.

I hope a reporter asks Denny Green who he thought the Raiders were in the post game press conference. This needs to happen.

Dan,

While you were in Miami you couldn't stop by and played QB for the Fins? Mighta been more effective (I know I know 400+ passing yards...means squat when you throw three BIG Ints)

Joe (Dayton)

well, when one makes picks..you dont usually take turnovers into account...at least not 3 fumbles. yikes. Steelers should have had that in the bag.

Hope Big Ben will be fine. He's throwing the ball pretty well for a 'management QB'.

Sonofabitch, I was ready to post the "The Raiders are who we THOUGHT they were!" and steve beat me to it!

Steve said...

Anyone else see Santana Moss pulling a 'Zidane' twice already on Jason David? What's up with that?

The Vikings won a convincing game in Seattle. Who'd a-thunk it?

And I'm a Vikes fan!

I'm going to miss Denny Green.

Next week's bye teams are a combined 6-22 (Washington, Detroit, Buffalo, Miami). I don't think we'll ever have a sorrier group of teams take a week off ever again.

Higher ratings

Cincinnatti at South Florida (basically meaningless College football game)
or
St. Louis at Detroit
(One of the seven most important baseball games of the year)

It will be interesting to see, I have a funny feeling football will win

There goes McNabb, puking his guts out and getting "sick" again in a close, tight, rough game.

He looks like "Superbowl" McNabb.

Kurt said...

3-9 with one game to go.

Christian Thoma said...

Actually, McCarver and Joe Buck have never announced for the Cardinals outside of their nationally-televised duties. McCarver originally called Mets games, and Joe Buck's father, Jack Buck, used to call Cards games.

Granted, they are both homers for the Cards. But what are you going to do, keep a backup set of announcers?

I'm sad to say I'm a Jaguars fan but I KNEW we'd have trouble with Houston. Always do. How do you beat a team 41-0 one week, have a bye, then lose 27-7? Only if you're the Jags that's how

NFL OVERTIME IS SO UNSATISFYING.

Couldn't agree more.

The problem with the college OT rules, though, is that they resemble some strange 22-man tennis match more than they do football. I think I even heard an announcer use the phrase "hold serve" in a college game once. The "alternating red-zone tries until the game is no longer tied" thing is, whatever you think of it, at best a football-like substance.

Of course, with the professional version, it's not football either--it's a coin flip.

Compromise proposal: OT begins with a coin flip and a kickoff, as usual. However, the first possession is NOT sudden death. If the first OT possession results in points, the team that started on defense will get a chance to be on offense. If the game is no longer tied after each offense has had one series, then it's game over. However, if things are still tied after one possession each way, then sudden death kicks in.

Advantages: many more TD's in overtime, and the end of the cheap OT field goal. Team that loses coin flip actually has a shot.

Disadvantage: may actually result in ties happening more often than once every four years or whatever. (Part of the "advantage" of the current system is that it encourages OT games to end quickly. The TV guys love that.)

Steve said...

I don't know, I like ties and all the crazy permutations that come with them. I say just don't have overtime. If you're tied at the end of regulation, it's a tie.

NLF Overtime is fine the way it is. Defense is part of the game. If you want the ball then just stop the offense

Brian in Oxford said...

I'm a big fan of the pro OT rule. Play some defense if you don't want to lose without getting the ball back. Or show some sack and do an onsides kick if you want the ball that bad!

Anyways, the college football rule would be okay, EXCEPT that they count all the stats as continuation of the game. Like....the quarterback threw for 8 touchdowns, when 4 of them were in overtime. And they won, 64-62.

It would make waaaay more sense (sorry, fantasy guys) to simply say the team won by 1 point. If it was 35-35 at the end of regulation, then the winners won, 36-35.

It's akin to counting shootout goals in hockey players' stats....which they don't.
