T.O.: The Afternoon Phase

OK, I can't possibly live-blog this TO thing entirely by myself, so I'm going to encourage any of you following the TO coverage -- whether on TV or online, via ESPN.com or blogs or whatever -- to chime in with your "coverage of the coverage" or just your analysis of the unfolding events. (Like the "experts" have anything more valuable or knowledgable to say than any of the rest of us?) Have at it!

I've just read that Michael Irvin, Drew Rosenhaus and Deion Sanders are all visiting TO as I write. There cannot be enough cameras on hand to accomodate that crew!

As an FYI - The Drudge Report seems to have the most up-to-date coverage of this as it comes out. They were the first place I saw any news of T.O.'s denial and they have developing coverage of his press conference.

On a side note, my favorite evil yet hilarious lines so far stolen from around the Blogosphere:

A-Rod tried to commit suicide also, but couldn't find the pills at the bottom of his purse

Plaxico Burress tried to commit suicice also, but dropped the pills

What T.O. considers a suicide attempt, Brett Favre considers breakfast

T.O. tried to call 9-1-1 himself, but got stuck every time starting with 8-1

Allow me to put it this way:

I live about 35 minutes outside of Boston, and work in Providence. Not exactly prime T.O. or Dallas Cowboys territory.

I also listen to WEEI Sportsradio for most of my day. The dominating theme (in fact, the ONLY theme) of the past six hours has been Terrell Owens, the police report, the hospital interviews, the press conference / non press conference / postponed press conference, etc.

I know T.O. is big business for sports media, but there's a SLIGHT chance they might be overdoing this, just a little bit.

I can't stream video at work. Let us know if something actually comes out that is worthwhile.

Lee,

Bill Buckner tried to commit suicide, but the bus went through his legs.

i've decided to keep relatively quiet until some more information is released.... lest my inner cynic rears her ugly head.

it's now the lead story on CNN.com, for those keeping score at home.

DS this is getting weird:

Luke (Nashville): How many more years do you see yourself being the Sports Guy if you do leave the Disney family are you going to set up a blog similar to what Shanoff has done?

Bill Simmons: (2:39 PM ET ) Who's Shanoff?

That was an excerpt for SG's chat today. What the hell happened with you and ESPN?

Perks said...

Dan, congrats getting in on Bill Simmons' chat.

Too bad it was a diss.

Luke (Nashville)
How many more years do you see yourself being the Sports Guy if you do leave the Disney family are you going to set up a blog similar to what Shanoff has done?

BILL SIMMONS
Who's Shanoff?

Shanoff (NY)
That. Hurts.

BILL SIMMONS
Just. Kidding. Although I wish you had worked as hard on the Quickie as you do on the blog.

What a cock of crap!! If Bill had to work 5 days a week, he'd no longer be married.

Big D said...

In Simmons' defense...

"Shanoff (NY)
That. Hurts.

BILL SIMMONS
Just. Kidding. Although I wish you had worked as hard on the Quickie as you do on the blog."

Personally, I liked the Quickie just as much as this blog, although you have much more freedom to cover stories throughout the day this way. With the Quickie, you got stuck if big news broke after 10AM.

heres the q dan

was that really you or an imposter claiming to b shanoff

u must answer this

What ever happened to Simmons blog? Buster Olney is the only one at espn that seems to work more than 2 days per week.

Bruce Feldman's college football blog is pretty active.

I was just coming to post that Simmons dig - is that the ultimate example of the pot calling the kettle black or what?

Simmons writes once a week - and he's been recycling the same jokes/observations for three years.

Anyways back to round the clock TO Coverage

Kurt Warner was going to commit suicide but the pills wound up in someone else's mouth

PhillyGirl said...

ok, I don't have streaming media at work. Can someone just relay what is going on??

I can't believe there is absolutely nothing else going on in this world that CNN has this story as their top news.

anonymous said...

let's just update this story when he is confirmed dead. short of that it's just another TO attention ploy that we dont need to help feed.

Ed said...

Too early for jokes about Owens's suicide attempt.

As someone who has battled depression my entire adult life, I understand what may have motivated T.O. to take too many pills, Certainly don't condone it, but (to quote both Sam Kinison and Chris Rock)I UNDERSTAND it.

Ease off T.O. until he gets well.

Charlie (Seattle) said...

I think I talked enough shit about TO in the last thread, and I don't want to offend even more people.

But...ahhh, nevermind. Instead I'd like to throw my hat into the FUCK BILL SIMMONS ring.

Sheldiz said...

ed... ease up, dude... if he wasn't still alive and there wasn't the chance its a media attention ploy, i don't think anyone here would be joking around.

incidently,
another sam kinison quote:

"I guess they're tough jokes. But there's lots of things you either laugh or cry at. And you just can't cry."

Big D said...

Well, touching on both topics of this post, Bill Simmons is now running a commentary on the TO press conference in his LiveChat.

I'm really not sure how to react to this.

TF said...

I'm not a Dr.

But I highly doubt that this guy tried too take his life or do harm to himself. He just worked out, he's too responsive, and seems in good spirits.

I think they're full of crap.

How many supplements is he taking? How many are the league testing for?

Ed said...

Sheildz,

Oh, I realize there is great comedic potential in this T.O. suiicide atempt story. I'm just saying that it is too early to exploit those opportunities. Hence my "Ease off until het get well" line.

mattie said...

Basically, if you buy TO and his publicist's comments in this conference, TO was loco and could have said anything, and the police are flat-out lying (there was nothing wrong with her, so either she said he said he was depressed, and she took the pills out of his mouth, or the cops who wrote the report made it up). Whatever really went on, this kind of crap could ONLY happen to T.O. Good grief.

PhillyGirl said...

Why didn't he come out early this morning and say...guys this is bullshit?? He is sick. How much time, energy and brain cells did we all lose dealing with his shenanigans?

God he is f-ed up. I have to seriously doubt the credibility of anyone out there who is a legitimate "fan" of his. Even sympathetic. He is such a bad role model for kids, adults, and everyone in between.
He's going to be the boy the cried wolf...

TF said...

Athletes,

especially guys built like TO take SEVERAL substances a day. You know those little pill boxes with the days of the week your grandmother uses? They're filled.

It doesn't mean it's illegal, walk into a GNC and look around there are over hundreds of supplements out there.

Joe (Dayton)

ChrTh said...

@tf: I have one of those boxes. I use it for trips.

Oh, I'm sure they're all legal supplements *wink wink*. I mean no one takes illegal substances to help recover quicker from an injury, right? *wink wink*

I have run hot and cold with the Sports Guy over the last few years. Some columns are hilarious some are racing to the end to see if he did anything good.

NO reason to throw Dan under the bus. Dan- we are eagerly awaiting your comments on espn at any time...

p.s. keep up the good work!

thirdstringjd said...

I love the "the pills were in drawers" excuse. Really TO you pour your pills out of the container and into your drawer and then lay around you house with the empty bottle?

This seems like the most fake story I've ever heard of. They spent the entire morning coming up with a strategy and what they came up with was that he had poured the pills into a drawer?

Ken said...

Anybody else watch the CNN coverage?

Not only did they cut into their live coverage of the school hostage situation in Colorado to show T.O.'s press conference, but did you see some of the quotes they pulled out of his statement to turn into "instant history" blurbs on the bottom of the screen?

And people wonder why we now get our news from Stewart and Colbert.

Cycledan said...

From Bill Simmons live chat today. What is with his last statement about not putting enough into the Quickie?

Luke (Nashville): How many more years do you see yourself being the Sports Guy if you do leave the Disney family are you going to set up a blog similar to what Shanoff has done?

Bill Simmons: (2:39 PM ET ) Who's Shanoff?

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
STEVE(ROCHESTER, N.Y.): WHAT ARE YOUR THOUGHTS ON THE UFC BLOWING UP THE WAY IT HAS

Bill Simmons: (2:39 PM ET ) I think boxing should learn from it. The UFC is great at A.) packaging their fighters, and B.) beefing up their PPV cards so there are 4-5 must-see fights on each one. If there's a bad main event, that's not necessarily a problem because you might see 2 other great fights. With boxing, if you pay 50 bucks for a card and the main event stinks, you're screwed.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Shanoff (NY): That. Hurts.

Bill Simmons: (2:41 PM ET ) Just. Kidding. Although I wish you had worked as hard on the Quickie as you do on the blog.

The cardinals have been commiting suicide for a week but everyone is just starting to notice.

ChrTh said...

On Simmons:

4 hour chat today (although he cheated by doing a little play-by-play of the TO press conference).

While I'm not Simmons, my take on the Shanoff comments is that Bill has never been fond of the Instant History shtick; he prefers longer, more uniform thoughts (this is the guy who can write 900+ words on movies like Varsity Blues). So I think by 'working harder' he was looking for more drawn-out thoughts and less shotgun firing approaches to doing the DQ.

If I had to guess.

thirdstringjd said...

I think that dig by Simmons is just another example of him becoming jaded.

He's been taking a lot of shots at blogs lately - even though he himself pioneered the idea of slamming other people for the incompetence (the same thing he slams bloggers for doing now).

It seemed really out of line since he didn't just let it die with the Who's Shanoff? comment - he actually revisited it which I thought was a bit strange.

oh well to each his own.

ChrTh said...

Well, to be honest, his followup on Shanoff wasn't really negative; he just likes the blog better than the DQ. I don't see an issue with that, as I feel the same way.

I think the reason he didn't want to leave it at 'Who's Shanoff' was because he didn't want people to accuse him of being an ESPN snob, i.e. if you're not on ESPN you're nobody.

FYI, I just posted a post about the Simmons thing. I did NOT write in to the chat.
