Yankees-Tigers Game 2:
Live-Commenting Frenzy

Nothing says excitement like... a rain check! It's Mussina vs. Verlander at Yankee Stadium in a day game to make up for last night's rain-out. Use the Comments area to offer (and track) real-time commentary about the game's action.

Update: A-Rod just struck out looking with the bases loaded to end the inning. ESPN mercifully cut to commercial just as the boos were beginning to cascade. He brings it on himself. Three pitches!

3Ks for Mussina in the 1st!?

Is he returning to form or are the Tigers' bats cold from the delay?

The radio guys from Detroit are mentioning empty seats. Hey, NY is the new Ted-lanta!

Am I the only guy in the world who feels sorry for A-Rod? He seems like a decent guy, and yes, he's not exactly been Mr. October. But the NY fans are relentless on him—as are the Boston fans, who seem to forget he tried to take less money to go there...

lol....

that A-Rod punch out was classic...

Two 97+ mph heaters high and inside, followed by a heartbreaking curve on low and away on the corner... A-Rod's knees buckled so hard it looked like he was about to pass out

heh... listening to the game in the office and heard A-Rod was coming up with bases loaded and 2 outs and was like "Phew... no big hit here.. "

Jeter is having a very A-Rod esque game thus far. An error in the field, a botched bunt and now an inning ending FC. Hopefully this will end all the Jeter man love we've had to endure since the postseason started.

Sorry for ARod? He who bullied his way out of texas so he could latch on to the Yankees/Red Sox and be considered a "winner"?

I can't go there.

Brian in Oxford said...

Boston fans have no place for someone with the mindset of "well, if I can't play for Boston, I'll go play for the Yanks."

Case 1, A-Rod.
Case 2, Damon.

Every other '04 hero who's returned was greeted warmly. (Roberts and Lowe at the ring ceremony, Cabrera with the Angels, Pedro back in June.)

Keithsrk said...

BTW - Has anyone seen the "enhanced GameDay" on mlb.com? It's fantastic! The only thing missing is the tears welling up in ARod's eyes as he walks back to the dugout.

These Detroit ABs seem awfully quick - Safe to assume Moose looks like his typical methodical self?

Chris W said...

Anyone else worried about Verlander's pitch count? He'll hit 100 through 5 at this pace.

Anonymous said...

Yeah, Chris W.: welcome to the 2006 Yankees batting lineup.

Chris W said...

No shit, but that goes against Leyland's talk of going right at them and not trying to nibble the corners. Plus Verlander isn't your typical nibbler that the Yank's thrive on. Regardless now that Damon hit that jack.

If the Yankees still have this lead after the 6th inning, the MLB officials might want to just call the game... you know... just in case it rains later...

As Rob Neyer alluded to in a chat a few days ago, they do make Jesus Hates the Yankees T-Shirts.

Dan, I'm sure it would make a good Hanukah (Chanukah?) present too.

Maybe there are empty seats because its a rain delayed make up game - some people do work in NYC.

ToddTheJackass said...

That would be just like some of the bastard Yankees fans to treat a playoff game like it's no big deal... bastards I tell you.

No wonder Jesus hates them.

Okay, I'll stop with that now...

Haters...Love so many haters are blogging as the wonder what Boston will due next year, boo-hoo. And as far as A-Rod and his "off year" Boston and ever other AL team wished they had a third basemen with A-Rod's stats.

Wont lose faith him, Dont care how bad he does...he has the talent. he Was MVP last year, Jeter this year. Most likely Cano next..or even better how about Bobby.

Dont hate..it just makes you look bad.

Matt said...

Tie game. Who would Jesus cheer for? I think Rick Reilly wrote a thing years ago where he intimated that Jesus was a Reds fan. Not sure what the thinking was there and plus Rick Reilly is a pompous d-bag, but I figured I'd at least get the discussion going...

I'd say Jesus would be a Brewers fan.

Jesus might wanna slide into the mug after a homer?

What sausage would Jesus be?

Last I checked it was Yankees fans that are hating on A-Rod just as much as everyone else.

If any other team had them, I don't think he'd get the boos that Yankees fans give him. So don't talk to us about hating.

You guys are so fucking spoiled and cry every year you don't win the World Series. Yankees fans expect it as a right of passage or something like that.

Yes, I'm a bitter Red Sox fan who is upset they didn't make the postseason. But my hope all season was that they would just make it to the postseason. We didn't and so no we just root for any team that's facing the Yankees (or for the Mets, our brethren in Yankee hating).

Yes, the Red Sox fanbase got very spoiled and has whined a lot about not making the postseason and no doubt earned the ire of many fans after we won in '04, and that I understand. So I completely understand why some people don't like the Red Sox for the same reasons that people hate the Yankees.

But I guarantee you that Red Sox fans wouldn't have booed A-Rod for the year he's having. Only Yankees fans are that dumb.

So you can say what you want about people being "haters", but don't pretend like Yankees fans are any better when they're out there booing one of the best players to ever play the game... especially when he plays for their team.

Anyone who wouldn't call in sick to go to a playoff game didn't deserve the tickets in the first place.

Ha! Chris, look at Leyland! What else was he going to say? He's a man's man, he got to "go right at them". And it's pretty much working (it's not like we're blowing you guys out of the water).

Which is why I wish the Yankees had fixed their pitching instead of their hitting.

I like this Granderson kid, he is clutch. By the way, I'm calling him 'kid' even though I just looked it up and he's technically a few months older than me. Ah, well.

todd - like you said you are bitter, please and dont make it like ever Yankee fan is booing A-Rod and like Boston has never booed one of it's own. Need I mention Manny, every year, and anytime he has had some bad play in the field you hear it. And please dont pretend Boston doesnt hate.

And why the cursing..cant have a civilized discussion?

and you are right we do feel we should be in and win the series every year. Why be happy with anything less? Then you wonder why it took 86 years.

Keithsrk said...

"please and dont make it like every Yankee fan is booing A-Rod"

Be honest - the vast majority of Yankee fans simply don't like A-Rod. Take a random poll and the majority of Yankee fans would rather have Brosius up in a key spot.

Just because there are a few ARod supporters among the many haters does not mean that Yankee fans like the guy. If he hits a home run, they'll cheer - but not as loudly as they boo when he Ks with the bases loaded.

As my father, a big Yankee fan, just told me on the phone - "They should've batted him 10th!"

But back to the important stuff - here's where the Tigers needed to be, in the 7th or later, with Zumaya on the mound. If they don't take care of business here, they simply weren't good enough to win this year and can start the offseason planning now.

ToddTheJackass said...

First of all, apologies to everyone who is not a Yankees fan, because the Red Sox do have the 2nd highest payroll in baseball, (although a staggering 80 million lower than the Yankees). Also, apologies to anyone who thinks that we Red Sox fans have an exclusive right to Yankee hating, we know everyone else does too.

True, not all Yankees fans boo A-Rod, but it sure sounds like a lot of them do.

As for Manny, he asks to leave, and let's face it, he doesn't always appear like he's giving it 100%. Booing for lack of effort (or being Rudy Saenez) is one thing, but Yankees fans constantly booing A-Rod is ridiculous.

Even when Manny is up to his antics, he doesn't draw the home-crowd ire that A-Rod does for striking out.

At least agree with me that booing A-Rod is dumb, and that those Yankees fans doing it aren't good fans.

If we can agree on that, then there is some hope...

And if I were a Royals fan, I think I'd be happy enough breaking .500 if it looked like the team were heading in the right direction.

I'm just glad that the Red Sox lost out on the A-Rod sweepstakes....God knows he would have found a way to screw up the 2004 post season and RSN would still be listening to that stupid 19-18 chant....on a different note I am hoping that Todd Jones is not allowed to pitch in the 9th inning today.

"and ever other AL team wished they had a third basemen with A-Rod's stats."

Yeah, I'd say Wright is a pretty solid alternative. I'd probably take Miguel Cabrera too.

How many games did Arod lose for the Yanks this year? At least three or four. Last time I checked, no individual loss could be pinned upon Mike Lowell, Joe Crede (this year anyways), etc

Anonymous said...

I think the fans ARE making A-Rod worse, but why does he wear 13? Why does he take only 4 pitches at key at-bats on a team where that's considered bad baseball?

He's not a bad guy, but he's clearly not normal. As an overpaid player having a bad game, I'm not surprised that they booed.

I'm getting depressed. Maybe even Torre and Jeter can't overcome A-Rod's curiously bad karma.

Cano and A-rod thanks for blowing the game. A-rod 0-4 with 3 strikeouts, Cano 0-4 with 6 runners left on base. Cano, just because you are a good hitter doesnt mean you can be too proud to put down a damn bunt. If you bunt in the 2nd to move 1st and 2nd nobody out to 2nd and 3rd, 1 out, Damon's fly to center scores a run. And the 9th was just pitiful. Lead off single by Matsui and Posada, Cano and Damon all go up there trying to win the game with a walk off 2 run homerun. Posada how about this, learn how to fucking bunt so we have a runner in scoring position for Cano or Damon to slap one the other way. God, they piss me off so much sometimes!

A win for Detroit is a win for America.

Did NY leave an entire borough on base today?

TBender, you can't speak for America, you live in Texas. Most of America wouldn't mind if we gave good for nothing Texas back to Mexico.

Jeter struck out in the 7th. Where was Mr. Clutch? HUH? HUH???? Yea...fuck you Yankee fans. Don't appreciate that you have a great thing.

Sorry Arod K'd with the bases loaded, but did you see the pitches? Verlander was painting corners with a 100mph fastball, then broke off a nasty curve on the outside corner. Only the mighty Pujols could hit that sequence.
